Evergy is upgrading an Arkansas City power system originally built in the 1940s. The power system is nearing the end of its service life, and the enhancements will improve energy reliability and help us meet the current and future needs of the Ark City community. 

Here's what you can expect:

• The line set to be upgraded is two miles in length.
• The line will follow the canal from the intersection of South D Street and East Harrison Street to the intersection of South 5th Street and West 5th Avenue.
• Existing poles are wood and an average height of 55-60 feet; the new poles will be steel and an average height of 80-90 feet.
• Construction is scheduled to begin in late May and complete in mid-December.

Not only do steel poles improve reliability and resiliency in our communities' harsh weather conditions, but upgrading the power system will also raise the height of the lines to increase safety for local businesses and residents.   

Additionally, Evergy will assist Cowley County Community College and Arkansas City in completing a walking and cycling trail along the transmission line. The trail will connect the university’s campus to its baseball field. It will also provide the community a place to enjoy the outdoors and a safe way for students to travel across town.
